Anyone doing any business online has no doubt heard about Pay-Per Click (PPC) advertising. PPC advertising can be a great way to make money online, but it does have many pitfalls for the uninitiated. If you want to start a PPC campaign, below you will find a step by step guide to setting up your campaign.

  1. Having a budget- To get involved in PPC advertising, you obviously need money to be able to pay for the advertising. You should have a budget for each campaign, and then work out ideally how many visitors to your site you would like for that budget. This enables you to accurately calculate how much you should bid for a particular keyword or phrase.
  2. Having a keyword list- This is not as simple as it sounds. If you don’t target your keywords and phrases correctly, you could end up having to pay for a lot of traffic to your site that never would have any interest in buying your product. This is money wasted.
  3. Setting up an account with a PPC search engine- Google and Yahoo are the biggest out there and hence they have the most competition bidding for keywords. You may want to consider some of the smaller PPC advertisers out there, as you can often get better placing that you will with Google or Yahoo.
  4. Bidding on keywords and phrases- Don’t bid to high as you still want to be making a profit, but don’t bid too low so you won’t be seen on the first page. If you are in a competitive niche, look for keywords or phrases that are still getting considerable searches each month but have less competition in the PPC stakes.
  5. Writing your Sales Copy- With a PPC campaign, you are paying for each visitor to a site, so you need to ensure your copy is well thought out and has a high conversion ratio. If you are not confident with your own copywriting abilities, consider hiring a professional.
  6. Having a well thought out and designed landing page- Like the copy, you need to ensure that your site is easy to navigate and, most importantly, your customers know where they need to click to buy your products.
  7. Analysing your results- Whether or not you are successful in your campaign or not, analysis is a must so that you can keep doing what you did right, and stop doing what you did wrong. You should be constantly trying to improve your click to conversion ratio, and analysis of this will let you know whether it is your site that needs improving, or you need to change the keywords you are bidding on.

Properly done, PPC advertising is a great way to get site visitors and make money online. You must ensure you follow the steps listed above to avoid potentially costly failures.
