You have to make sure that the topic of the website isn’t similar because visitors might confuse your websites and visit the famous competitor instead.

IMO most people when they are looking to buy a domain name will try their best to get one with their main keyword in it. But having a domain related to one that is popular can be a good thing too.

For any overzealous newbies out there, I’d say more often then not, the operative word in there is “yet”…just be very careful.

You also mentioned something very important Chris that should be noted (especially for avoiding litigation)…..NONE of the sites mentioned (except for the cow lol) are in the same “field” as what they’re named after…this is of utmost importance.

Ex. I also own a direct sales business which was originally named Dell Distributing…..had I been selling computers or computer related anything, I could have easily ended up in a world of hurt

Did Johncow.com came before or after JohnChow.com? I think its a good example of a domain name that rhymes and sounds exactly like the well-established one minus the “h”. But I wonder why they have to sell it if their domain really benefits them.

that is a fantastic idea. people will be able to remember the name a little easier if it sounds or rhymes like a well established site. It could make a big difference.

For my newest project, I didn’t think of SEO, but something clever and witty. That is how I ended up buying: thebestforumever.com. I mean it is a bit long, yet it is easy to remember, fun to market. Domain names are hard, but just make it fun and witty and it will come to you. Though, your idea to make it rhyme with other websites is smart, yet I some websites, network like that, so whatever works for you.
